Alternative Healing
Alternative healing and alternative health (also known as holistic healing)
methods go back long before our modern, high-tech health care system. In
ancient times, people used plants, seeds, and herbs to heal naturally. While no
one in their right mind would want to throw out all the miracles that modern
medicine makes possible, there are a lot of areas (such as chronic disease)
where alternative medicine can provide a more effective way of dealing with
health problems.
There are too many different disciplines and methods that constitute what
people generally refer to as alternative healing that they can't all be listed
here. Some of the more popular methods include: acupuncture, ayurveda,
bodywork, Chinese Medicine, herbalism, homeopathy, meditation, osteopathy,
Psychophysiology, relaxation, and yoga.
Some people also swear by flower essences, massage, gem work, crystal
healing, and aromatherapy.
There is no shortage of different practices and the people who champion
them. Some alternative healing practices, such as ayurvedic medicine, Chinese
medicine, acupuncture, and ashtanga yoga, have been used in other parts of the
world for many centuries -- much longer than our own system of medicine has
been around.
Generally, alternative healing involves the patient taking more personal
responsibility for his or her own health, in contrast to waiting for doctors to
give you orders and doing whatever they tell you to. Different alternative
medicine will work for different people, so you may have to experiment and try
a few different things to see what works the best for you. It's more of a way
of an ongoing way of life, rather than running to the doctor's office only when
something appears noticeably wrong. Alternative healing has more to do with
prevention than with cure.
Conventional Western medicine usually works better for severe trauma and
other medical emergencies. Alternative healing methods can be more effective
with chronic illness and problems whose origins are difficult to pin down. When
confronted with symptoms and complaints from a patient, an alternative doctor might
focus on seemingly distant causes, such as your digestion, your mental and
emotional health, or possible toxins in your daily environment.
Alternative healing methods are increasingly being accepted by the medical
establishment and are coming into mainstream acceptance.
